Overview
The Hospice Trend Report includes measures that are publicly reported on Care Compare. The following analyses display each of the quality measures and compares the provider rates to other benchmark rates. Colored labels indicate whether the measure is HIS-based, Claims-based or CAHPS-based, whether it is used in the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (QRP), whether a higher rate or lower rate is better, and if the measure is used in the 5 Star ratings.

The Hospice 5 Star rating is based on 8 of the QMs currently posted on Care Compare. CMS uses the top box scores from the CAHPS Hospice Survey to calculate a hospice 5 star rating (Family caregiver survey rating) . Due to its public accessibility, consumers can use this information when selecting a hospice provider for their end-of-life care needs.

Hospice Item Set
CMS uses 7 elements from the Hospice Item Set (HIS) to calculate the Comprehensive Assessment Measure at Admission (Hospice and Palliative Care Composite Process Measure). A comprehensive assessment on admission is an essential element to successful care planning and ultimately results in the best opportunity to receive top box scores on the hospice survey.
